To illustrate this point, here is a look at a small collection of new-age poppers: Stillwater's Smack-It; Creek Chub's Knuckle-Head; Luhr Jensen's Power Pop; Boone's Sundance Striker Popper; SPRO's Popper50; MegaBait's Bubble Pop; YoZuri's Mag Popper; Tsunami's Talkin Popper, and Gags Grabbers Floating Rattling Popper. All share common traits. They are all floating poppers and (except for the Sundance Striker and Power Pop) they all have internal fish-attracting rattle systems, realistic finishes, and 3-D eyes.

The Bubble Pop has an innovative feature that is unlike that found on most mainstream poppers today. Brian Hawkins, designer of the MegaBait LA Slider swimbait was winner of Best of Show in the soft lure category. Brian named the swimbait in memory of his nephew Little Anthony (LA). It's patented due to its innovative flexible cavity that fits around any of four jig heads - 1/2, 3/4, 1, 1-1/2 oz, each with a 6/0 hook. So the weights are interchangeable and you can battle a large bass without doing major damage to the plastic body since the hook is not directly related nor pre-molded into the body. Brian's second breakthrough feature is a "loose tail" design enabling the tail to swim even with the 1/2 oz insert on a slow retrieve. This is something thicker-tailed swimbaits don't do well. Last weekend we fished the final event of Western Outdoor News, Saltwater Series in San Diego. Since we were in the points race our goal was to catch a quality fish in all 3 categories: Tuna, Yellowtail & Bass. Our goal was to concentrate on the YT/Calico Bass & to then pick up whatever tuna we could on the way back from San Clemente Island.

The patterned holographic finish that covers the Live Jig as well as the head of the Tuna Candy is about as close to our reflective baitfish as anything I?ve ever fished. The feathers/skirts of the Tuna Candy feel durable with beautiful vivid colors as well as feeling ?heavy duty?. The 3 1/2 oz weight of the Live Jig is perfect for casting long distances but not to heavy to fish in shallow water or on light line when the fish are on the smaller size, such as the current run of Yellowfin Tuna.
